Case Study: Modernizing a Historic Community Landmark Without Losing Its Character
The Old Davie School Museum & Event Venue is one of Broward County’s most historic landmarks, originally built in 1918 as the first permanent school in the Everglades.
Today, the property serves as a museum, educational resource, cultural destination, event venue, and community gathering space in Davie, Florida.
While the organization had continued evolving over the years, the website infrastructure had not kept pace.
The previous website had been patched together over time across multiple updates, additions, and organizational needs. As often happens with long-running websites, the experience had become increasingly disjointed — making it difficult for visitors to clearly navigate the site or quickly understand everything the organization offered.
Compounding the issue, the site had been built on an outdated WordPress theme that was no longer properly maintained.
The Challenge of Outdated Website Infrastructure
Outdated website infrastructure creates more than visual problems.
When a WordPress theme is no longer actively maintained, even routine software updates can introduce compatibility issues, functionality breaks, security vulnerabilities, and long-term stability concerns.
For organizations that rely on their website as a public-facing communication tool, this creates both operational and reputational risk over time.
In this case, the challenge was not simply redesigning the website aesthetically. The project required rebuilding the site on a stronger foundation while also improving organization, usability, messaging, and overall user experience.
Creating a More Cohesive and User-Friendly Experience
The Old Davie School serves multiple audiences simultaneously, including:
- Museum visitors
- Educational and school groups
- Event rental inquiries
- Community programming participants
- Tourists and history enthusiasts
- Donors and supporters
Over time, those overlapping functions had become difficult to organize cohesively within the existing website structure.
The goal of the redesign was to simplify that complexity while preserving the warmth, authenticity, and historic character of the organization itself.
The project included:
- Migration away from outdated website infrastructure
- Full website redesign and modernization
- Content restructuring and navigation improvements
- Mobile optimization
- Messaging refinement and organizational clarity
- Event venue positioning strategy
- Improved user flow and call-to-action structure
Rather than over-designing the experience, the focus remained on clarity, usability, and helping visitors more easily understand the full scope of the organization.
The Result
The new website provides a cleaner, more organized, and more stable digital experience that better reflects the role the Old Davie School plays within the community today.
Visitors can now more easily navigate museum information, educational programming, tours, exhibits, event rentals, and community initiatives through a more intuitive and cohesive structure.
Just as importantly, the organization now has a modern website foundation that is significantly more stable, maintainable, and adaptable moving forward.
